Students of EDN Climate Education Program Win President's Award

Mike Town, A.P. Environmental Science Teacher
Redmond High School: Redmond, WA

Last year when educator Mike Town and his students asked the teachers of their school to reduce their carbon footprint through a month-long Cool Schools pledge, the 49 teachers at the school twice exceeded the pledge, each reducing an average 2,000 lbs of carbon dioxide that saved the school over $7,500 for the course of the school year. This year, Earth Day Network is supporting environmental science teacher, Mike Town with the Climate Change Educator grant, to continue the Cool Schools pledge at their school. The school has already purchased solar panels for the school, putting them at 42% beyond the Kyoto protocol target. Additionally, Mike Town and the students have spread the challenge to 17 other schools in the region using workshops and student presentations. Due to the success of the Cool Schools Challenge, these students of Redmond High School will be awarded the President’s Environmental Youth Award this Earth Day at the White house in Washington, DC. As a reputable award, the Earth Day Network is glad that teacher Mike Town and his students are being recognized for their success, and we look forward to helping them promote the Cool Schools Challenge to other schools in the nation.
