School Facilities
Did you know that buildings consume 72% of our electricity, emit approximately 39% of carbon emissions, and school building construction represents the largest construction sector in America – totaling $80 billion between 2006 and 2008 – about 27% of America’s construction market?
Unfortunately, the structure, safety, and healthfulness of our nation’s school buildings are not being given a priority in school budgets. As a result, the majority of schools are in serious disrepair. School-wide conservation efforts such as installing renewable energy systems, more energy-efficient products, daylighting options, green roofs, and improving the overall building envelope can significantly help improve the health and learning environments for students. Additionally, incorporating recycling, healthy and safe materials at schools, including cleaning supplies, are all excellent ways to promote on-site interdisciplinary learning through projects that increase the academic performance and health of students.
