Students hanging up staff Climate Pledges

In the heart of Times Square, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School is creating green space both within the school and community. Students are planting trees in Times Square as part of the Million Trees Initiative and have even created an organic vegetable garden that students and staff tend to throughout the year and use as an outdoor classroom space. They sell lettuce from the garden and use it to teach students about how climate change affects food supply.

In addition, students got 25 staff members at the school to perform a climate pledge, which asks participants to take an ecological footprint quiz and pledge to reduce their carbon footprint a promised amount. Some teachers have even stopped driving to work to meet their goal! At the end of the school year, the teachers will retake the footprint quiz and those who met their pledge will be awarded energy efficient light bulbs and a reusable bag that art students design. Extra bags will be sold to fundraise for the school, and business students will devise a strategy to sell them.
