Operating since 2000, the Merrick Academy is a State University of New York charter elementary school that serves 500 K-6 students. Located in the very close-knit community of Queens, New York, the school has a mission to become one of the finest public schools in America. Part of this mission includes going green and EDN is happy to help the school reach that goal! In fact, the makeover by EDN grew out of the success of the school’s “discovery garden,” developed by parents of students and used to plant flowers and shrubbery. Students have benefited so much from this green space that teacher Lisa DiGaudio has helped them to write letters to area businesses to further increase greenery in the neighborhood.
