EDN’s Get Out the Vote efforts really paid off in the U.S., turning out Latino and African American Environmental voters who helped defeat several anti-environment propositions – C4C Voters Provide the Margin of Victory

EDN conducted a national public opinion poll in the U.S. which spotlights current views on Global Warming, including how Americans think it affects them personally and what should be done about it. Do you agree?

EDN Senior Vice President Susan Bass recently joined several other partners of the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) in Mexico City for talks with the newly-elected mayor and his environment staff. CCI tapped Earth Day Network in August to partner in the effort to help the world’s largest cities substantially cut their greenhouse gas emissions.

For our members worldwide, EDN President Kathleen Rogers was interviewed by BBC Radio just after the release of the Stern Report on the Economics of Climate Change. And EDN Communications Associate Adam Ratliff measured the Ecological Footprint of a journalist on the BBC’s World News Tonight – hear the stories on our home page then measure your own carbon emissions – Ecological Footprint Quiz.

bulletEDN is set to unveil a new Carbon Offset program in the coming weeks. In the meantime, U.S. travelers who book on the internet now have two opportunities to offset their carbon emissions. Expedia has partnered with TerraPass to offer offsets for flights. Travelers can spend anywhere from $6-$30 to offset their carbon emissions and the money goes to clean energy projects. Travelocity has partnered with the Go Zero Campaign and now allows travelers booking vacation packages to offset their carbon emissions through a tax-deductible donation to The Conservation Fund.

Cut down your carbon emissions by simply switching to compact fluorescent bulbs. The International Energy Agency says 19% of global electricity is used for lighting and the carbon dioxide produced by lighting up the world amounts to 70% of global emissions from passenger vehicles and is three times more than emissions from aviation. A global switch to efficient lighting alone would trim the world’s electricity bill by nearly one-tenth. So, make the commitment to CFL’s and see if you qualify for a discount.

Earth Day Network is supporting the U.S. release of two feature films, The Great Warming and Nobelity. Spread the word about both these great films and buy a DVD of Nobility from our Climate Change Solutions site - 50% of the proceeds benefit Earth Day Network.

The William C. Velasquez Institute, our C4C partner, has just released U.S. Election Day exit poll data showing a strong pro-environment agenda in the Latino Community and a significant increase in registered Latino voters, thanks in part to EDN’s Get Out the Vote efforts. WCVI Exit Poll Results

EDN’s partner in China, Sheri Liao, head of Global Village of Beijing (GVB), is visiting the U.S. to raise awareness about the public’s role in greening the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, including our Light up your Heart Campaign. Sheri was recently voted Charity Person of the Year by the China Central Television audience and its nomination committee. In partnership with Earth Day Network and Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Program, GVB plans to use Light up your Heart to switch 2,008 urban and rural communities and schools across China to compact fluorescent (CF) light bulbs in time for the Olympics.

Dear Amy, I’m still using pots and pans that were handed down to me by my mother. Are they dangerous?

Karen in Easton, Connecticut

They might be Karen. Glass, cast iron, stainless steel (without abrasive cleaning), and terra cotta without lead glaze are really your best choices. Avoid aluminum pots and pans because food cooked in aluminum can react with the metal to form aluminum salts, which have been associated with Alzheimer's, dementia and impaired visual motor coordination. Even stainless steel cookware can become a problem if you clean it frequently with abrasive material which releases small amounts of the toxic metals, Chromium and Nickel. No-stick finishes such as Teflon and Silverstone scratch easily and when heated release little bits of plastic into the food, as well as toxic fumes over high heat. Two chemicals in those gases are linked to cancer or tumors in lab animals (PFOA and TFE, tetrafluoroethylene) and two are potent global warming gases (PFB, perfluorobutane and CF4, tetrafluoromethane).
