Established in 1985, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) is a prestigious secondary school located in Northern Virginia, operated by Fairfax County Public Schools. TJ is a not a magnet school per se, but a school with selective admissions created to improve education in science, mathematics and technology.
Ranked #1 among "America's Best High Schools" in a study by U.S. News and World Report, TJ has had more National Merit Semifinalists than any other high school in the U.S. for most of the 1990s and 2000s. Additionally, the school has some of the highest performing students worldwide in AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Government and Politics and AP U.S. History. With such a high caliber of education, the school serves as a model to other schools across the nation.
