Earth Day Network Eastern European Fellowship - Paid
Earth Day Network is seeking an emerging Eastern European (incl. Russia) environmental leader to participate in a fellowship program funded by the Trust for Mutual Understanding. The program provides housing, $700 per month for living expenses, as well as travel to and from country of origin for a fellow. The fellow will live and work in Washington, DC for Earth Day Network, an international environmental non-governmental organization, for a six-month period beginning as soon as possible.
The fellowship is available to candidates with a background and interest in environmental issues. The fellow will work as a program officer for Earth Day Network.
Responsibilities will include:
- Implementing programs providing access to clean water to communities in assigned regions, building NGO capacity, sustainability education, and solutions to community environmental health threats;
- Coordinating EDN’s Eastern European network of environmental and social change organizations, as well as our network in one other region (Asia, Pacific, Inter-America, Africa) dependent on interest and language skills;
- Researching funding opportunities in regions; and
- Identifying strategic partnerships.
Specific tasks may include (but not be limited to):
- Providing environmental, event, campaign and program information to network members and the public via the internet, email, phone and regular mail;
- Developing and implementing regional and issue-specific work plans;
- Developing and distributing action and fact sheets for assigned regions;
- Researching funding, project and partnership opportunities;
- Participating in the development of funding proposals and project work plans;
- Representing Earth Day Network at meetings and events.
In addition to working as full-time staff member at Earth Day Network, the fellow will participate in professional development opportunities, taking advantage of the numerous non-profit organizations and government agencies in Washington, DC to build their capacity as environmental leaders. Opportunities will include seminars, fact-finding meetings with leaders in the field, educational visits, and issue development around EDN’s campaign themes.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have experience working on environmental issues, in particular climate change and water issues at the Eastern European level, an understanding of those issues at the global level, and an interest in policy and project work. Other qualifications include proficiency in Microsoft Office, and fluency in spoken and written English. Additional language skills will be looked upon favorably. Applicants should also hold a University degree equivalent to the American Bachelor’s Degree or higher. Fellows should be prepared to work toward specific outcomes both independently, and as part of a small team.

Department of Architecture to bridge the worlds of design and education for

opportunities for this internship. In essence, EDN wants to expand the
potential of NEXT.CC, its marketability, and content, all within the realm of
promoting green design education. This is a largely autonomous internship
that is great for an undergraduate thesis or graduate study in action.
Responsibilities
These entail coordinating
with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s personnel and interns to
develop the launch of NEXT.CC on EDN’s Education website, in addition to
communicating its possibilities to others, exploring funding opportunities and
developing content for the site.
He/she will also work
closely with the Communications Department, helping with the design of web
pages and marketing/outreach materials, both print and online.

Summary
Earth Day Network relies on
volunteers and interns to assist in ongoing campaigns as well as running
ongoing programs and office operations. Specific volunteer events are typically
held in the evenings during the week but this is subject to change as necessary
to meet EDN staff and volunteer availability. We seek to standardize our
volunteer program, broaden and increase participation from new constituencies
and provide a stable base for assisting with unexpected and urgent programmatic
needs.
We are seeking qualified
applicants for a Fall 2008 as well as Winter/Spring and Summer 2009 Volunteer
Coordinator Outreach Internships. Candidates may possess experience or interest
as a volunteer themselves, or volunteer coordination, volunteer events,
community outreach, event planning, or other operations/coordination
experience.
Responsibilities
The Volunteer Outreach
Coordinator Intern will work with network members and local community groups to
develop our relationships and reach. Additionally, the intern will identify and
implement innovative strategies to grow our volunteer capacity. Opportunities
exist for a variety of special projects and EDN is open to intern interest and
experience.
Specifically, Volunteer Outreach Coordinator interns, in collaboration with EDN
staff, will:

Summary
THere is a chance to combine your interest in environmental issues with your passion for education, and to make positive changes in K-12 schools nationwide - through curricula, events and Earth Day Network’s far-reaching Educators’ Network.
The Education Intern liaises with the Director of Education and the Education Coordinator at Earth Day Network (EDN) to support members EDN’s Educators’ Network and EDN’s school-based greening activities. The goal is to build widespread environmental and school greening education resources within K-12 schools across the US. This year, the focus is on creating materials and lessons on school greening, green jobs curriculum, green design, policy, and supporting teachers at selected schools across the country that teach “green,” civic minded lessons in environmentally degraded areas. Next, we are members of the Energy Action Coalition that runs the Campus Climate Challenge putting green energy on over 500 schools and campuses nationwide, and we would love your support for this or any of the above projects. Lastly, we want to connect with you on taking your interests and joining them with our expanding Education program. Any of these programs is open for your selection and likely to include travel to an event or action.
Responsibilities
The Education Intern will research, write, publish, fundraise, and coordinate outreach through:
- assisting in the development and dissemination of curricula and lesson plans on K-12 environmental education, school greening, and civics;
- coordinating outreach to network members and new constituents in their area of interest;

Summary
Like many non-profit organizations Earth Day network (EDN) relies on
information technology to help achieve high-impact results. For example, our
interactive website offers registration, tracking and coordination tools for
Earth Day participants, and frequent content updates. We recently acquired
tools to enable internet campaigns and communication with our members on
important issues.
EDN is seeking qualified
applicants for Fall 2008 and Winter/Spring 2009 IT Internships, with a strong
background in information management, analysis, technology, and communication
tools.
Responsibilities
The Information Technology
Intern will support organization and office technology needs on a daily basis.
Activities may include:
- Assist
with desktop and network administration for all users and interns.
- Implement
or Maintain online e-advocacy campaigns
- Maintain
supporter records; create, run, analyze reports on supporters, etc.
- Convert
legacy information to a relational database such as Microsoft Access.
- Research,
interview and develop proposals for new or alternative IT service
providers and vendors.
- Harvest
information to expand or develop new toolkits for meeting EDN objectives.

We are a small team and we
all share the administrative burden of our work. EDN interns will be assisting

The Communications

Primary duty is to assist
in the planning and execution of Earth Day 2009 events. Event organizing
experience a plus.
Marketing/Partnerships: Primary duties are to assist in the marketing of Earth
Day Network Programs, Earth Day 2009, the Earth Day Network website and blog,
and Earth Day Television, and to help develop and sustain partnerships with
vendors, donors, and peer organizations. Also supports the development of
message and materials for all programs and works with staff to develop

Media Relations: Primary duties are to assist in media outreach and media
relations, including writing, research, phone calls and media events. Also
supports the building and maintenance of press and media lists. Publicity
experience and knowledge of Vocus PR a plus.
EDN-TV/Website/Blog:
Primary duty is to research and provide content, both print and video.
Knowledge of film/video production, website design a plus.
Environmental Policy: Primary duties are to create and build relationships with
key government staff and leaders, and to track hearings and legislation on
Capitol Hill and elsewhere. Also conducts issue-oriented research and attends
hearings and briefings. Political science or similar background a plus

The Green Schools Intern liaises with the Director of Education and Green Schools Coordinator supporting green school activities. Our National Green Schools Campaign, in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, seeks to green all of America’s schools within a generation through promoting widespread environmental awareness, creating school greening education resources, and conducting “green makeovers” at selected K-12 schools across the country. Specifically, our focus is on: creating resources and materials on how to green one’s school; writing environmental education and green school lesson plans; researching green school policies; creating and publishing school greening website content; and supporting teachers at selected low-income urban schools across the country who are transforming their schools into models of sustainability.
