The California Academy for Liberal Studies Early College High School in Los Angeles is part of the Partnership to Uplift Communities (PUC), a non-profit charter school management organization designed to guide underserved students in the greater Los Angeles area to a college education. In 2003, Ms. Jaqueline Elliot and Mr. Ref Rodriguez opened CALS Early College high school in a Los Angeles office building. With 300 students at the school, a lot of time and attention can be given to each individual. Another unique aspect of the school is the requirement that each student take at least one college course per semester at a local community college to direct students on a path towards a higher education.
Soon after joining the school, teacher Andrew Stephens founded the Mean Green Team, a student environmental organization that includes activities like: clean-up days, tree planting days, field trips to connect students with nature, and environmental activism. Both in and out of the classroom, these students are learning from and about the environment, giving them the values and tools to be community leaders as they move on to college and future careers.
