     SCHOOL PROFILE:   Carol Guthrie

Carol Guthrie has been teaching in the Cincinnati Public Schools at Aiken High School for 7 years. She teaches Biology, Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology. Prior to teaching, she managed chemical research and development at Kenner Products/Hasbro Inc. in Cincinnati. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Biological Sciences and also holds an M.B.A. from Xavier University in Marketing. With her involvement in Earth Day Network Carol hopes to combine her love of nature and her scientific interests in order to promote student engagement and activism in environmental causes such as air and water quality in the Cincinnati area.

Joyce Brubaker

Joyce Brubaker Trytten has been teaching high school English for 14 years. Growing up in farm country, she was no stranger to the dance between man and nature. After serving in the Peace Corps in the Caribbean, she came to understand even better the delicate nature of the environment and humans’ ability to affect it on many different levels. Since then, she has taught in a number of schools in the Cincinnati area, always with a focus on challenging her students to become more socially aware and to “be the change they wish to see in the world.”

Located in downtown Cincinnati, Aiken College and Career High School offers students a college preparatory program with professional applications in Government/Public Administration, Law & Public Safety, Human Services, and Education/Training. Ninth and tenth grade students at the school work with teams of teachers and can take honors classes and explore colleges and careers, while upper-class students have the option to take dual-enrollment courses with the University of Cincinnati. The ultimate goal is for every senior to become accepted to college or a career placement of choice by the time they graduate.
