2007-2008 INITIATIVES
|
With the elimination of curbside recycling following Hurricane Katrina, there has been no city-wide effort for reinstatement, except at KIPP: McDonogh15 School for the Creative Arts. Through a partnership with Earth Day Network, these largely low-income students have raised awareness about this issue by starting a school and neighborhood recycling program in the French Quarter. The hope for EDN-sponsored teacher, Elijah Sproles is to bring their recycling initiative to all residents of New Orleans. Additionally, Mr. Sproles and his students have taken action to make their school greener and less energy consuming. With help from EDN, they installed a 1,000 ft2 green roof – the first ever at a New Orleans school, and have replaced the entire schools’ light bulbs with energy efficient CFLs.
