2007-2008 INITIATIVES
Teacher Linnea Garrett and students of her science class are proving to the city that this south Chicago public school is one of a kind. With an urban minority population, the students are getting outdoors, connecting with nature and defending the natural world. In 2007, the students culminated their adopt-a-beach cleanup on Lake Michigan with activism to ban smoking on public beaches and curb the litter of cigarette butts. This year students are testing indoor air quality in their classrooms and will present the results with the goal to obtain better air quality controls at the school.
