  Named after the renowned African-American chemist Percy Lavon Julian, Percy L. Julian High school has operated since 1975 as a college preparatory institution. With a culturally diverse and highly educated staff (many of whom are alumni of the school), priorities are given to encourage community and parent involvement, increase the opportunities of advanced courses in math and sciences available and prepare students to contribute greatly to society.   Linnea Garrett

After developing her passion for service learning at Wittenberg University in Ohio, teacher Linnea Garrett participated in the Americorps program at Orr High School, a public school in Chicago. Following the program, she received her Masters of Arts in teaching from National Louis University in 2003 and then began teaching at Percy L. Julian High School. Now in her sixth year at the school, Linnea has experience teaching biology, earth science, environmental science, physics, and Advanced Placement chemistry. She is also the teacher sponsor of The Science Club, Academic Decathlon, Brain Bee, and the girls and boys swimming water polo teams.

She is currently working on her Ph. D. in Science Education at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and will be traveling to Costa Rica in March of 2008 as part of the Toyota International Teacher Program, which will expand her awareness and understanding of global conservation issues.
