Last year, Students of Percy L. Julian High School visited Lake Michigan for an Adopt-a- Beach event with the Alliance for the Great Lakes. The students, disgusted with the number of cigarette butts they found on the beach, decided to write letters to city council asking for a ban of smoking on beaches. The action of these students and others involved in the Alliance Adopt-a-Beach program resulted in a city ban of smoking on beaches, effective October 17, 2007.
