History teacher Amanda Hurowitz is working with students at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) to address climate change both within the school and the community. Earlier this fall, she and students of the Environmental Impact Club organized a global warming rally, participated in Powershift lobby day, and conducted letter-writing campaigns to ask their legislators for stronger climate legislation.
To promote change at the school itself, the students are fundraising to purchase solar panels for the school electrical grid. Ranked as the best school in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, this magnet school outside of Washington, DC believes the solar panels will provide educational opportunities for students, as well as inspire other schools across the nation to invest in renewable energy technologies also.
