Located in the very close-knit community of Queens, New York, Merrick Academy is a charter elementary school comprised of a diverse student body. Fifth grade teacher, Lisa DiGaudio is raising awareness among her students through fun environmental lessons, movies like “An Inconvenient Truth” and letter-writing campaigns directed at important decision makers.
Later this spring, Lisa and other teachers will incorporate the entire school in environmental activities, so that kindergarten through sixth grade students will be participate in “Project Green” to compost cafeteria waste, expand recycling, and fundraise for environmental efforts at the school. Additionally, the school's “discovery garden” will be expanded, providing much needed green space in an overwhelmingly concrete urban neighborhood.
Additionally, as one of the schools selected to receive a “green makeover” by Earth Day Network, Merrick Academy became one of the first school's in the nation to receive a “living wall.” This is a wall of vertical plants that will pump between 300 and 500 cubic feet of clean air, improving the air quality of the school. Additionally, Merrick received a greenhouse, energy efficient light bulbs, and eco-mural using non-voc paint and incorporating favorite children's book characters, like the hungry hungry caterpillar.
