EDN says NO to Subsidies for Coal to Liquid! The U.S. House Education and Labor Committee has passed Rep. Hilda Solis’s Green Jobs Act of 2007 and defeated a coal-to-liquid process amendment which would have extended the bill’s provisions to the highly wasteful practice of turning coal into liquid. EDN and our partners marched on Congress June 14th with buckets of dirty coal in hand to denounce legislation supporting coal-to-liquids and coal gasification initiatives. Both are environmentally unsound and a giant step backwards for a clean energy future. Call your representative and urge them to oppose coal-to-liquids and gasification legislation.

Another dinosaur whose time has gone is the inefficient incandescent light bulb. EDN is aggressively pushing for the phase-out of traditional bulbs in favor of compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and other energy efficient lighting. We’re ready to move ahead with the phase-out and have been working extensively behind the scenes to pressure lawmakers.

Stop Uncle Sam from pre-empting states and cities that want to drastically cut their emissions. With states and cities leading the way, the federal government is scrambling to catch up and wants to tie hands along the way. Don’t let this happen! California and a growing list of other states should be lauded, not penalized, for being clean energy leaders. Email your support to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) urging them to protect states rights.

EDN’s Earth Day on the Hill
brought prominent civil rights, religious, environmental and political leaders to Capitol Hill for meetings with congressional leaders about global warming legislation. We also hosted a policy briefing, which was facilitated by U.S. Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA). Thousands more around the country signed our Climate Change Petition, the first national call against any corporate attempts to “grandfather” pollution permits. Join them and tell Congress that you want an immediate freeze in carbon emissions and the auctioning of pollution permits which will generate the resources necessary to convert to a green economy. Sign our Climate Change Petition!

Dear Amy, I’ve heard that baking soda makes a great cleaner, but does it really work? Debbie in Baltimore, MD

Yes, baking soda pretty much does it all. It cleans, deodorizes, and whitens. Start in the bathroom and brush your teeth with it. Then use it to clean the sink, toilet and bath tub. If you have a cat, give the litter box a few shots. Then sprinkle a little in a certain someone’s smelly shoes – not too much of course! Move on to the kitchen and clean the counter and sink with it. After all that work, you’ll be tired and deserve a spa treatment. Create of paste of baking soda and water and gently scrub your face with it to exfoliate your skin. Now, how many products can deliver that much? And it’s cheap!
