Earth Day Network News

EDN has released the 2007 Urban Environment Report , a comprehensive environmental report card that ranks 72 U.S. cities according to more than 200 environmental, health and quality of life indicators. This Report's Vulnerable Population Index redefines the term 'environment' to include related issues such as public health, poverty, education and quality of life and has caught the attention of mayors across the country.

EDN and the AARP Foundation Women's Leadership Circle (WLC) are presenting the workshop Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for Women on Saturday, April 14th during the WLC Womenvision Summit at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, Arizona. Speakers include EDN President Kathleen Rogers, Author of the HBO Documentary Too Hot Not to Handle Susan Joy Hassol, Green Guide Institute President Wendy Gordon, the Interfaith Center's Energy and Environment Program Director Leslie Lowe, Aspen CO Mayor Helen Klanderud, and ICLEI Executive Director Michelle Wyman.

EDN was honored recently by SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company,
Inc. with its 2007 Community Service Award for our efforts to broaden
the environmental movement year round. SBLI USA's Seventh Annual
Recognition Gala, held January 27th in NYC, raised more than $185,000
for EDN and their generosity will help us green schools in New
Orleans, reach more low income community groups, and expand our
Climate Change Solutions Campaign.

Dear Amy, My husband insists on using bug sprays indoors, and while I would oppose that, I do use fertilizer for my indoor plants. We want to try something else in honor of Earth Day. Any suggestions? Joan in Atlanta

Yes! You guys need to eliminate toxic home pesticides, including pet flea and tick products, if you use them. For ants, try a 50-50 mix of borax powder and sugar. Line your cabinets, cracks and crevices where you see ants but keep away from children and pets. For fleas, use a good metal comb daily and I recommend organic castile soaps for bathing pets. It also helps to vacuum. If you still have problems, try Flea Busters non-toxic service. For plants, fertilize with liquid seaweed or fish emulsion and compost.
