2007-2008 INITIATIVES
Reducing CALS Ecological Footprint
|
This year teacher, Andy Stephens and his Mean Green Team are conducting waste and energy audits at CALS early college high school to reduce the ecological footprint of the school. They are looking at how much waste is produced per week, as well as how much energy the school uses for electricity and heating, with the ultimate goal of bringing those numbers down.
Part of reducing their footprint is incorporating recycling into the school building. In one average week, this small school was able to recycle 308.5 lbs of paper and 19 lbs of bottles and cans. To see more of the results, click here. Additionally, the school is working with California Recycles to raise money by recycling e-waste, like cell phones and old computer equipment.

The three gave presentations to attendees of the conference about green action in schools and also lobbied their congresswoman, Ms. Lucille Roybal-Allard about climate change bills in the house.
