My name is Meryl McDonald and for the past three months I have been an intern at the Earth Day Network. During my time here I have been able to explore many of my interests and become involved in the organization on a very intimate level. I began researching sustainable development here at the Earth Day Network while looking at the Green Building industry. During these three months I was also fortunate enough to travel to Brazil with 14 other classmates to further my research and enhance my experience while in DC. In Brazil we studied environment and development topics on the international level, exploring everything from the slums of Rio De Janeiro to hiking around the Amazon rainforest. On one of the first days of our trip we hiked to the highest peak in Rio De Janeiro. The peak is located within Tijuca Forest National Park. As my group and I take you on a tour of the mountain you will learn about the unique history of this forest and some of the projects that take place within. “The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent upon it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do.” ~ Galileo |
