Making it back down the steep stairs was more difficult than going up- mostly on the nerves. But the views were spectacular and the hike much less strenuous down-hill. It was relaxing passing the familiar trails and coming across the trees that we had planted just a few hours before. It is remarkable how quickly you begin to feel at home in nature. I remember thinking the first time I began to walk amongst Tijuca’s forest how different it smelled than forests back home. The smell of pine was replaced with the sweet smell of palms, vines, and humid air. “It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson |
