1) Visitor’s Sign: “The scenery of Walden is on a humble scale, and, though very beautiful, does not approach to grandeur, nor can it much concern one who has not long frequented it or lived by its shore; yet this pond is so remarkable for its depth and purity as to merit a particular description.” ~ H.D. Thoreau I decided to spend my winter break, 2006, in search of an environmental respite in New England, where the early winter season’s scenery is simply beautiful. On New Years Eve, I found myself in Concord, Massachusetts, entering the Walden Pond State Reservation, the location in which Henry David Thoreau built a modest wood cabin and lived in solitude for two years, two months, and two days. In addition to the 102-foot deep glacial kettle-hole lake, the reserve protects 400 acres of surrounding forest. The pictures that you will be viewing were all taken on that day, as I walked around the perimeter of the pond. Once I discovered just how special Thoreau’s home is and how meaningful my trip there was to me, I knew I would have to share the pictures with as many people as possible! |
